Class descriptions:
Music Methods with Marilyn: Marilyn will show us how to best use our rehearsal time
by analyzing the music and anticipating problems. She will also discuss
choosing appropriate repertoire.
Breakout A: Music Directors 101: Conducting and Bell/Chimes Pedagogy (teaching
techniques) taught by Marilyn Lake; the AGEHR Area VIII Chair
Breakout B: Rehearsal Management and Recruiting Ideas; presentation by Angie
Moss of First United Methodist Church, Marion who will facilitate a round
table discussion on these two topics
Breakout C: The Director’s Tool box: Score Study, Bell Assignments, and Beginner
Music Theory; taught by Laurie Stock, director at Lutheran church of the
Resurrection in Marion.
Ely is located near Interstate 380 between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.
CLINICIAN'S BIOGRAPHY
Marilyn is an elementary music educator in the Shawnee Mission School District in Kansas City. She teaches private piano and preschool music, and directs two church handbell choirs as well as the Heartland Ringers, a community handbell choir. She also directs the only hand chime choirs in the Shawnee Mission School District, made up of 5th and 6th grade musicians. She has degrees in Music Education and Music Therapy from the University of Kansas, and a Masters in Music Education from Emporia State University. She is a member of AGEHR, Sigma Alpha Iota Music fraternity, MENC and KMEA. She is the current Chair of Area 8, a five-state region within the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers (AGEHR). Marilyn has been ringing bells for over 40 years, and also plays the piano, sings and performs on the carillon.
Marilyn has two college-age children, a husband of 28 years, and 3 dogs. In her spare time (ha ha ha!) she enjoys KU Basketball, reading, quilting , kayaking, cooking and geocaching.
Marilyn was born and raised in Texas, mostly in the Dallas area. College took her to Kansas. She has organized handbell choirs in both Overland Park, KS (Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, Stanley Presbyterian Church, Circle of Faith Christian Church and Southminster Presbyterian Church), and in Palos Verdes, CA (St. Peter’s By the Sea Presbyterian Church). Her talent is in building graded programs that feed on great music and great fellowship.
